Multivariate testing compares combinations of multiple page elements simultaneously. It's more powerful than A/B testing but requires 5-10x more traffic.

What is multivariate testing?

Multivariate testing (often abbreviated MVT) is an experimentation method where multiple elements of a webpage, email, or ad are tested simultaneously in different combinations to identify the best-performing combination. Unlike A/B testing, which compares one change at a time, MVT examines how multiple variables interact.

According to a 2024 Optimizely research report, multivariate testing identifies winning combinations 30-50% faster than running sequential A/B tests on the same elements — but only when traffic volume is sufficient. How multivariate testing works

A multivariate test setup:

  • Measurement — track the success metric for each combination

MVT analysis can isolate which individual element changes contributed most to the lift. For example, the test might reveal that the new headline drives most of the improvement, while the new image had no effect.

The math: with N variables each having M variants, total combinations = M^N. A test with 4 variables of 3 variants each = 81 combinations. Each combination needs 1,000+ visitors per variant for reliable significance, meaning the test needs 81,000+ visitors total.

According to Optimizely benchmarks, multivariate tests typically run for 4-12 weeks vs 1-4 weeks for A/B tests on similar pages.

Multivariate is most useful when:

  • You have very high traffic
